Larsen Bay
Larsen Bay is named for Peter Larsen, a furrier, hunter, trapper & guide.
Larsen Bay is located 62 miles west southwest from the borough of Kodiak.
Larsen Bay itself is a small bay off the much larger Uyak Bay.
The population of Larsen Bay is about 75.
The village is located where Larsen Bay joins Uyak Bay.
Despite Larsen Bay’s remote location, there is a hydroelectric plant that provides electricity to the village.
The tide rises and falls about 20 feet twice a day!
The first salmon cannery on Kodiak was built in 1882 at the mouth of the Karluk River. In 1889 the salmon harvest from the Karluk River reached 3.4 million Salmon! Over 100,000 were caught in one net!
Kodiak Salmon Packers in Larsen Bay is the oldest operating salmon cannery is Alaska! Built in 1911 it still employs about 160 people each summer!
In 1962 a fish pass was built around the falls on the Dog Salmon River so sockeye salmon could reach the wonderful virgin spawning and rearing habitat of Frazer Lake. This is where some of our best sockeye salmon fishing takes place. It is also where National Geographic and others do much of their filming and photography of Kodiak Bears.
Any halibut over about 30 lbs. is a female!
Two Halibut over 400lbs were caught at Larsen Bay Lodge in 2003! (The current Alaska State record halibut is 459lbs.)
